Admittedly, “attack” isn’t really the right word, but that’s the name of the movie. And I want to say it’s a line in a Talib Kwali song (I think).
What I’m describing is really more “invasion” than “attack.” And really, it’s an invasion of apparatchiks.
There is the kind of mean expression, “Those who can do, those who can’t teach.” I get why that’s funny, and I get the impetus for making a pithy zinger like that. However, I think that expression omits a lot of reality. I won’t bother pointing out all the flaws cuz I’m using a phone to type this, so concision is key.
But in a nutshell, why does a business exist? A business exists to return money on investment (at least theoretically). But that is generally not the same reason why people work. People generally work for a few different reasons: for money, for social status, to have something to do during the day, to add to the narrative of their lives, etc.
However, a lot of people want the material upsides without particularly caring about the specifics of the business. And not to single out particular jobs, but this leads to swaths of professions. And like… does society really need, for instance, compliance audits? Probably. I once went on a tour of The Tenement Museum (while living in a tenement building, so the floor plan was strikingly familiar), and it, the tour guide said that circa 1900, street musicians in NY commonly sang about things like the non-food additives mixed into food as a means of spreading the word. So I acknowledge audits are far more efficient and uniform in both focus and format.
And so back to the original point (if one exists). Attack of the clones. When a company grows, it attracts new people who are not participating for the same reasons as the initial participants. As a result, the culture of the company changes, as it tends to become more like the new joiners, who nowadays typically have less technical roles than the earlier employees. This phenomenon leads me to think that ultimately, a company founder should record videos when the company is initially founded, and articulate the goals and tone. Obviously those matters shift with time, and so maybe record annual videos or at particular inflection points, cuz the current approach — aka Lord of the Flies — is like going on a quest without a map.
